Being “Green” At Immanuel – How We’ve “Grown Green”

  • Eco-Palms – using sustainably harvested palms for Palm Sunday, which are fair trade for grove workers. (since
  • 2008)

  • “A Cup of Justice” – serving shade-grown, pesticide-free, fair trade coffee (since 2002) in china cups. (since 2003)

  • “Be A Good Apple” – pledge program to support local farmers and promote Maine food products. (since 2006)

  • Eco-tainer Cups – purchase and use of biodegradable cups at special events when using “disposable” cups is unavoidable. (since 2007)

  • Caring for Creation survey was developed and the creation and display of a “New Leaf” wreath. (since fall 2007)

  • Protecting Kids from Toxic Chemicals Workshop – Immanuel provided workshop space for this event. (Dec. 2007)

  • The Green Space column appears in weekly Sunday bulletins, which promotes and encourages eco-friendly everyday actions.

  • Earth Care Bulletin Board provides current information about MeIPL green tags, Wind Watts, MeIPL renewable energy programs, and much more.

  • CFL Bulbs
  • CFL Bulbs – All fixtures in the sanctuary and parlors are fitted with CFL bulbs. Information about safe disposal is available through Efficiency Maine. (since 2001)

  • Recycling – Paper and other waste materials have been reduced due to recycling, which saves money on dumpster fees and reduces what goes into landfills. (since 2001) Purchase of Recycled Paper Products such as paper towels, and office supplies. (since 2002)

  • Earth Care Themes are incorporated in the Sunday worship. (since 2001)

  • Safe Disposal of e-Waste and Hazardous Waste - Provide information and resources for safe disposal of toxic waste, (such as batteries, old paint, etc.), and provide a basket for collecting discarded batteries. (since 2002)

  • Networking with and attending EarthCare Team network events in Chewonki, Morris Farm and Bowdoin. Attended Montreal Kyoto Protocol Rally with other ECT members. Network with Maine Council of Churches Environmental Justice Program/MeIPL. (since 2002)

  • Ecomaine Recycling facility tour in spring 2007.

  • ”Step It Up” Earth Day Rally attended in 2007.

  • Adult Forums and Youth Classes featuring guest speakers on energy efficiency, local foods, showing of the DVC “Renewal” series from Regeneration Project, with segments about diverse communities of faith in the US working on Creation Care.

  • Sunrise Guide – promoted the purchase and use of this “buy local” booklet with money-saving coupons supporting local businesses. (spring 2008)

  • Use of Non-Toxic Cleansers and Garden Products encouraged at Immanuel…. products such as Bon Ami, and Simply Green, etc.

  • "Green" Library developed at Immanuel with “green” resources, books, guides for energy efficiency, articles and essays.

  • Green Electricity is being considered when the budget will allow.

  • Green Tags and Wind Watts continue to be promoted for purchase.

  • ”Solar for Maine Congregations” workshop was hosted by Immanuel in 2004.

  • Earth Care Team officially became a part of Immanuel’s Outreach Committee in 2007, and maintains its own budget.
